Smyrna

Smyrna began its redevelopment of the downtown area in 1988 when city officials took a giant step to improve Smyrna's appearance, thereby allowing the city's "true colors" to shine through. Like in so many other towns, Smyrna's downtown district had been left behind with the changing times and lifestyles. City officials worked with architects and planners to bring community spirit back with a small town atmosphere. Phase I was designed to encourage pedestrian traffic and welcome visitors. The second phase, completed in 1998, brought in new housing and retail.

Since its inception, Smyrna has seen a number of booms and busts. First established in the 1830s as a religious campground for a multitude of denominations, the town evolved through the years from a tiny frontier village to a thriving community during the railroad boom in the 1840s. The Civil War also left its mark on the town, with the Battle of Ruff's Mill being fought around the Concord Road Covered Bridge and Sherman's visit reducing the town to ashes during the Battle of Smyrna on July 5, 1864.

Smyrna has rebounded from Sherman's fiery march, recessions, depressions, wars, and other disasters by the sheer pioneer spirit on which it was founded. The fourth largest city in the metro area and second fastest growing city in Cobb County, Smyrna was voted by Atlanta Magazine as one of the 10 best cities to live in among 51 studied throughout metro Atlanta.

In keeping with its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere, Smyrna hosts a wide range of community events each year. Summer concerts, food and culture celebrations and of course the two-day Spring Jonquil Festival bring family and friends together to enjoy their community as well as each other’s company. A popular winter event is the “Coming Home for the Holidays” tree-lighting festival and holiday bazaar.

The Jonquil City also maintains an extensive network of parks and recreational facilities. Several playgrounds, multi-use fields, an arboretum, walking trails, senior centers and a sensory garden can all be found right in town. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the 18-hole Fox Creek Golf Course. Anyone interested in Smyrna’s long and colorful history will find a visit to Memorial Park or the Smyrna Museum & Train Depot fascinating.
